Music Education
We teach dances from Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Europe, Appalachia, and Latin America, offering students a living experience of cultures from around the world. World-class traditional music played on fiddles, guitars, banjos, and other authentic instruments conjures a wonder and intrigue not possible with recorded music.
Folk dancing helps students develop coordination, working memory, spatial awareness, and self-control, naturally integrating the body and mind. Studies show that harmonizing physical and mental activity in this way supports cognitive function, priming students for learning in the classroom.
Folk dancing integrates students from diverse backgrounds and ages into a shared experience. Simultaneously challenging and fun, the dances encourage students to work together as a team, building social-emotional intelligence and self-confidence.
Benefits of Folk Dancing include:
Multicultural literacy
Learning the social and historical context of the dances
Cooperation and social-emotional intelligence within groups
